Acclaimed artist Tanya Raabe-Webber has been awarded a Grants for The Arts, supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, to be an artist in residence with visual arts organisation Project Ability, Glasgow as part of their International Summit for learning disability artists and their supported studios, 23 Feb - 25 March 2015.
Tanya will be creating a live responsive and collective portrait gallery that captures and explores the physicality’s and interactions of the artists and visitors participating in the International Summit of Learning Disabled Artists and their Supported Studios, which takes place at Project Ability, Trongate Studios, Glasgow 4-6 March 2015. Tanya explains:
“During this residency I will be drawing and painting portraits of the artists, visitors and delegates and exploring their identities, and the complexities surrounding artists’ practices within a supported studio.
These portraits will form an evolving ‘portrait gallery’ to be based at the studios, that will evolve in-front of your eyes. As you might see when you visit a portrait gallery in Scotland, England or even Australia. I will use drawings, anecdotes, stories, photographs to develop these multi layered portraits.
During the summit each artist will have the opportunity to sit for their portrait in an open studio where other artists, delegates and visitors can watch, listen or even join the conversation and draw their own portrait.
There will be lots of opportunity for chit chat whilst we draw each others portrait too.”
Project Ability has a thirty-year history as Scotland’s leading disability arts organisation, and is regularly funded by Creative Scotland.
